FotoFacial (IPL)

FotoFacial at the Maryland Plastic Surgery Center Medical Spa...

Photo Rejuvenation uses intense pulsed light (IPL) to create younger, healthier, more radiant skin.  The procedure is frequently referred to as a "FotoFacial" or "FotoFacial-RF" treatment and it usually requires no recovery time and causes little or no discomfort after treatment. The procedure can be performed on the face, neck, chest, hands and arms.

How does Photo Rejuvenation work?

Younger skin contains more collagen than older skin, and photo rejuvenation uses laser pulses of light to encourage your body to form new collagen. The result is firmer and smoother skin. Unlike laser resurfacing, photo rejuvenation requires no recovery time and is a much more gentle procedure. Dr. Summers will help you to determine the best treatment to achieve your desired results.

What Can Photo Rejuvenation Do For Me?

  • If you have rough or coarse skin, photo rejuvenation can smooth it, creating a healthier appearance.
  • Photo rejuvenation can minimize the appearance of large pores.
  • If you have fine wrinkles, photo rejuvenation can be an excellent treatment to reduce them.
  • Photo rejuvenation therapy is recommended to reduce freckles, age spots, uneven skin tone, and mildly sun damaged skin.
  • Photo rejuvenation is an effective treatment for rosacea and broken capillaries.
  • If you have red splotches, photo rejuvenation can eliminate them.
  • With no recovery time necessary, photo rejuvenation is perfect for those without the ability to take time off from work or other activities.

What Can I Expect After the Procedure?

  • After the procedure you may immediately resume all normal activities.
  • For some patients, the treated areas may appear worse for the first few hours or days. Spots may become darker or redder. This is part of the healing process and will rapidly improve. Concealer may be applied to cover the affected areas.
  • You will see gradual results over a period of time, as the body continues to produce more collagen.
  • In some cases, mild swelling and bruising may occur, which subsides within a few days.
  • While you may experience improvement after one procedure, most patients have a series of three to six treatments performed every 2-4 weeks in order to fully correct the problem areas.
  • After the first series of procedures, it is recommended to have additional treatments every 4-6 months to maintain the results.
  • Immediately after the procedure, your skin will be more vulnerable to sun damage and we will advise you how to properly protect it from the sun.
